KYOTO–Famous for its fall foliage, Eikando Zenrinji temple here will be lit up through Dec. 2 so visitors can marvel at the natural scenery during evening strolls.

A trial test run was held Nov. 1 at the centuries-old temple in the city’s Sakyo Ward ahead of the start of a special night viewing period from Nov. 3.

About 700 lamps illuminated the 3,000 or so maple trees that turn bright red in autumn. Some of the trees were also reflected off the water of the Hojo-ike pond.

Visitors can enter between 5:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. They will also be allowed to view the temple’s principal statue, known as “Mikaeri Amida” because the Buddha looks over its shoulder at the visitor. Created in the Kamakura Period (1192-1333), the statue is designated by the central government as an important cultural property.

Admission is 600 yen ($5) for junior high school students and older visitors.
